Martin's paintings combine physical intensity and intellectual rigor. Traditional methods and a formal approach are at core of his personal, contemporary vocabulary. "While I am working, a painting event takes place. Some of that is planned. Some of that is pure accident. A painting event is a situation where two colors may meet or a line may overlap other colors. I rely heavily on intuition when I am working... I try to take my thinking cap off." Building layers from thin grounds of underpaint, Martin adds translucent layers of wax medium and varnish, creating, finally, a luminous and veiled statement about color and aperture.
