Doug Trump’s oil paintings, on both canvas and silkscreen, incorporate fields of pigment and balanced gestures to convey monumental space. Rich balances of color and collaged surfaces serve as background to finely drawn gestural figures rendered primarily in pencil and charcoal. These paintings have lengthy working histories, with the artist often working on one piece over a period of years. Concerned with texture, surface and abstraction, this language can have the compelling effect of raising interpretative questions, thereby establishing the works as potent narratives without conclusions.

Trump has had a number of highly successful exhibits in New York and elsewhere in the United States. His paintings were the subject of a 1995 Parameters exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, curated by Trinkett Clark. His works are in numerous private, museum and corporate collections, including American Express, Pfizer, Wellington Management, Deloitte & Touche, among others. His work has also been featured in the annual Art of the 20th Century Fair in New York, and the Works on Paper Art Fair at the Armory on Park Avenue.

Trinkett Clark, former Curator of Twentieth Century Art at the Chrysler, wrote: "He relishes the idea of anarchy and authenticity, enthusiastically welcoming the challenge of creating work that is sensual, personal and immanent. He feels compelled to embrace aesthetics purely and honestly. Charged with an energetic incandescence, his work offers a visual journey that includes and transcends our immediate reality."
